History of the Race for Virginia

Started in July 2002, the Race for Virginia set out to accomplish two purposes. First, to remember the life and spirit of Virginia Clark, a victim of Neuroblastoma, who passed away just a month after her 9th birthday. The second purpose of the race was to raise as much money as possible for Pediatric Cancer Research at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh to ease the burden for other children and their families dealing with the deadly effects of cancer.

The race became an integral part of the 4th of July in Cranberry Township. There has been perhaps no greater way to show our sense of community than to band together to enjoy some exercise and raise money for a good cause.

For each of the first 9 years of the race, the Board of Directors chose to run the race in memory of another child who had lost his or her battle with some form of cancer. Through bringing the families of these children and our community together we have had the opportunity to raise awareness of pediatric cancer and its effects. In 2011 - the 10th and final year of the race - the Race Board has decided to honor Virginia and all of the previous friends.

The proceeds from the race are donated each year to Pediatrtic Cancer Research through Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and the race has raised more than $400,000 over 10 years. We would like to thank all those who raced or walked with us over the years and encourage you to continue to make a donation to The Race for Virginia and Friends.

Sincerely,

The Director of The Race for Virginia & Friends
